Upcoming Events at the OU
Our friends at the OU are hosting two events that may be of interest to the Selden’s Sister community.
Law and History: Introduction to Sources and Approaches
Workshop
Time: 10am-4pm
Date: Friday 18 October 2024
Location: Online (Book here)
The workshop is aimed at researchers at all levels, especially legal researchers who are interested in adding a historical dimension to their research, and historians interested in adding a legal dimension. It may be particularly useful for postgraduate and early career researchers.
The sessions will focus on different approaches to legal history and types of sources used in legal historical research. In each session, an active researcher in the field has been invited to present their use of the source or approach, with an opportunity for questions and discussion.
The full programme and tickets for this free, online workshop are on the Eventbrite booking page.
Legal History in Unexpected Places
Conference
Time: tbc
Date: 29 November
Location: Online (Booking Open in November)
This will be the fifth conference in the OU’s ‘Diversities, Dilemmas and Discoveries’ series.
Where can we find legal histories? Historians look far beyond legal papers, often venturing into unexpected places – whether geographical, archival, theoretical or interdisciplinary. This conference invites papers discussing stories, sources, and approaches that show this ‘sense of disciplinary adventure’.
Unexpected places are broadly defined – we look forward to being surprised! – but among the areas we welcome are:
Physical places – whether a single street, a jurisdiction, oceans or outer space
Sources – e.g. family history, local history, unexpected archives, art and literature
Disciplinary meeting places – law, history and the humanities, arts, sciences, social sciences, etc.
Theories and approaches.
Call for papers now open!
We particularly welcome proposals which address the central theme of diversity, dilemmas and discoveries.
Abstracts (not exceeding 300 words) should be submitted by email to OULS-legalhistory@open.ac.uk by Friday 11 October.
